Glossary of Fishing Terms |

| Angling | Fishing with a pole and line |
| Artificial bait | Any manufactured bait that is not nor has ever been alive |
| Backlash | A line tangle on a bait casting reel caused by the reel continuing to spin after the bait has stopped moving |
| Bail | the pivoting U-shaped part of a spinning reel that guides the line on the reel during retrieval or rewinding |
| Bait | Anything used to catch fish, baited hook or lure of some sort. |
| Bait-casting reel | A reel with a revolving spool situated perpendicular to the rod. |
| Bait casting rod | A rod with small eyes designed for the reel to sit on top of the rod. |
| Baitfish | Small fish that usually run in schools and are fed upon by most predators |
| Barbless Hook | A hook with no barb or the barb bent down. Required in many of the worlds waters. Great for catch and release. |
| Billy | A short club used to kill fish |
| Bobber | Term to mean same as a float |
| Brackish Water | Water that is a mixture of fresh and salt water. Usually found in areas where a stream or river enters the ocean |
| Braided | Line that is wound from several trans of smaller line to make a stronger line. |
| Bream | Any sunfish including bluegill, shell-cracker, redbreast, redear and green sunfish. |
| Bucktail | A headed jig with hair of a deer. Usually tied to imitate minnows. Now artificial hair is used in many applications |
| Casting Reel | A reel that is open, sits on top of the rod and the spool is 90 degrees of the rod. Also called baitcasting reel. |
| Catch and Release | A conservation practice of releasing fish alive after catching so others may have an opportunity to catch that fish again. |
| Charters | Also called charter boats. Boats and crews to hire for a specific time for fishing. Usually large lakes and oceans. |
| Chest Waders | Waterproof waders that cover from your feet to chest, held up by suspenders. |
| Chugger | Top water bait with a concave face that makes sounds when pulled through the water |
| Closed Face Reel | Same as a spin-casting reel |
