With a population of approximately 18,044,505 people New York is ranked 2nd
in the
Nation in population. The State has an area of 49,108 square miles of 127,190
square
kilometers, which is divided into 62 counties and is ranked 30th in
the United States in
area. The State was settled in 1614 and then admitted to the Union on July 26,
1788.
This States flower is the Rose and their State Bird is the Bluebird and the
State is commonly
knows as the Empire State. With an elevation of 5,344 feet, Mount Mach is the
highest
point in the State and is located in the northeastern part of the State near the
Vermont
and New York borders.
Albany is the State Capital, however, New York City is its largest town. The
major industrial
areas in this State are located around Buffalo, Rochester, Rome, Syracuse,
Utica, Schenectady,
Albany, Binghamton and New York City. The agricultural uses of the land are in
the raising of
dairy cattle, poultry and cattle. Crops raised in the State include grapes,
pears, applies, peaches,
potatoes, beans, oats, peas, strawberries, corn and wheat. They also harvest
forest products.
Major mineral occurrences in this State are Silver, Clay, Emery, Iron Ore,
Natural Gas, Gypsum,
Limestone, Salt, Petroleum, Lead, Slate, Sandstone, Talc, Titanium and Zinc.
Harvests from the water include Menhaden, Porgies, Oysters, Clams and Scallops.
