With an area of approximately 31,113 square miles or 80,583 square kilometers
South
Carolina is ranked 40th in the United States by area. However, with a
population of
approximate 3,505,707 people the States is ranked 25th by population.
This state was
settled in 1670 and was admitted to the Union on May 23, 1788. The states
highest point
is Sassafras Mountain located on the northwest edge of the state along the North
Carolina
and South Carolina border, with an elevation of 3,560 feet. The State
Flower is the
Carolina (Yellow) Jessamine and the state bird is the Carolina Wren.
South Carolina’s capital and largest city is Columbia but the major
industrial areas are
located around Greenville, Spartanburg and North Augusta. The primary
agricultural uses
of the state are in the raising of cattle, hogs and poultry. The States main
crops are cotton,
peaches, soybeans, melons, vegetables, corn, peanuts, tobacco and tomatoes. They
also
harvest forest products. The only major mineral occurrences in the state are
Clay and Mica.
Along the coastline this state harvests Oysters, Crab, Mullet and Menhaden.
