Virginia was settled in 1607 and admitted to the Union on June 26, 1788. With a population
of approximately 6,216,568 people Virginia is ranked 12th among the states in the Union.
Virginia has 40,767 square miles or 105,587 square kilometers of land which ranks it 36th
in the United States by area. Popularly know as "Old Dominion" the states highest point is
Mount Rogers with an elevation of 5,729 which is located in the southwestern sections of
the state near the Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia borders. The State Bird is the
Cardinal and the State Flower is the Dogwood.

Although Richmond is the Capital of the state Norfolk is its largest city. The major industrial
areas of the state are located around Norfolk, Newport News, Richmond, Lynchburg and
Roanoke. The dominant land uses in agricultural are for the raising of hogs, sheep, cattle,
dairy cattle and poultry. Crops raised include wheat, tobacco, apples, barley, peaches, oats,
corn, soybeans, peanuts, melon and cotton. You will also find truck farming of vegetables
and the harvesting of forest products.

Along the coastline this state harvests Menhaden, Clams, Crabs and Oysters from the waters.

Major mineral occurrences include Coal, Clay, Gypsum, Limestone, Lead, Slate, Soapstone,
Titanium and Zinc.
