The State was settled in 1670 and admitted to the Union on May 29, 1848. Wisconsin
is ranked 26th in the Nation in area with 56,153 square miles or 145,436 square
kilometers which has been divided into 72 counties. With a population of approximately
4,906,745 people the State is ranked 16th by population in the United States. The State
is commonly called the Badger State and has chosen the Wood Violet as its State Flower.
They chose the Robin for their State Bird. Timms Hill, with an elevation of 1,951 feet, is
the highest point in the State and is located in the center of the northern part.

Madison is the State Capital and Milwaukee is its largest city. The major industrial areas
are located around Madison, Jamesville, Racine, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Sheboygan, Oshkosh,
Appleton and Green Bay. Major minerals found within the State are Iron Ore, Limestone,
Lead and Zinc. The dominant land use for agricultural purposes are in the raising of cattle,
hogs, sheep, poultry and dairy cattle. Crops raised are oats, corn, tobacco, sweet corn, peas,
vegetables, rye, potatoes, cherries and apples. Forest products are also harvested in the State.

With an abundance of lakes and shorelines the State harvest Chubs, Yellow Perch and
